Aside from being South Africa’s most unique and talented indie science fiction writer, Christina Engela is also a retired human rights activist. From 2008 to 2018, Christina was active within several LGBT and Pagan rights activist groups in South Africa, occasionally making forays into international issues. During that period, she rose to leadership roles in two local LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations: SA GLAAD and ECGLA. During 2012-14, she was also the lead researcher for the Alternative Religions Forum (ARF), an initiative project of the SA Pagan Rights Alliance, of which she was a executive committee member from 2012-2018. Christina has worked hard as both an activist and an author, and has consequently received the following awards for both her fields of endeavor.

For Writing:
- 2010: Christina won the Ebook Diva writing contest held on Facebook in 2010. Her short story “Homecoming” received the most votes as the winning short story.
For Activism:
- 2016 March 19: The SA Pagan Council (SAPC) awarded Christina the “Ribbon on the Witches Bouquet” prize for her advocacy work on behalf of the South African Pagan Community.
