Action! Adventure! Karma!
Whoever said ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ had obviously never encountered high-powered energy weapons. All General Albert McIntyre-Smythe (recently re-un-retired) knew for certain about that was, it wasn’t him.
The Deannan Uncivil war was in full swing, and for most of it so far, the fascists appeared to be holding all the aces. They were younger overall, better equipped, and there were more of them. On top of that, they had some sort of quantum field isolating the system from the rest of the physical universe, so the Terran Empire was effectively powerless to intervene. They were on their own.
Only, not quite.
All that stood in their way now, was a rag-tag collection of locals, and the sort of contenders most people probably wouldn’t risk a bet on: The Loyalist Militia, Deanna’s vampire underground (did that need capitalization? He wasn’t sure) and the weird little Terran colony’s criminal underworld (the less he said about them,the better).
The Loyalist Militia were a lot of angry locals, including retired military veterans with more patina than you’d find in a museum – folks who just wanted their abducted friends and relatives back, didn’t like tin-pot wannabe dictators telling them how to live their lives, and most importantly – could handle a blaster a little.
There was Beck the Badfeller – who was not only Deanna’s most famous bounty hunter (and that super-secret device he kept hidden in his pocket that still didn’t explain how smoothly things seemed to be going) – and also the loderunner Celeste and its motley crew who seemed to have a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time (and which he could scarcely believe he’d described as ‘a military asset’)! On top of that, they’d recently come by a weird secret weapon developed by some sort of quantum physicist with crazy hair and no eyebrows who was supposed to be their ace-in-the-hole.
If General Smythe ever felt any amount of pity for his foe, then – as the time came at last for the forces of good and evil to face each other in a climatic final battle – the sobering memories of the sights and sounds that had greeted him at the liberation of Xanadu, rendered the impulse still-born.
It was time to end it.
There was no question that Deanna wasn’t going to be torn to shreds in the process.
The only open question left was: could it be put back together again?
